BREASTFEEDING; A CRUCIAL PART OF MOTHERHOOD

World international women's day was celebrated some days ago with various themes in different quarters, a crucial one in this time where women are trying to recover from the effects of the deadly coronavirus. I must say here that women are great tools for societal change, either positively or negatively. Women are home keepers, nation builders, and great helping hands to our men, hence they should be celebrated.

The MAN WITH THE WOMB ( Womb man, woman) has unique features structurally, physiologically, and psychologically. Their wiring may be complex but they are tender in the heart, hence they should be treated with care and love. In the midst of the present happenings in the world, women should not be ignorant of what motherhood entails, as detailed knowledge of this period of females' life is important to make them the real salt and light they are to the world.

Breastfeeding as a key role of motherhood is very pertinent. According to the world health organization (WHO), breastfeeding is the process of feeding a mother's breast milk to her infant either directly from the breast or by expressing (pump-out) the milk from the breast and bottle-feeding it to the infant. The first breast milk given to a newly Horn baby is called colostrum. Colostrum, according to medical research, is said to be of great nutritional value and must be taken very seriously, even though some traditions believe such yellowish milk is a toxin and should not be given to a newly born child.

According to the WHO, nearly 2 to 3 infants are not exclusively breastfed for the recommended 6months, a rate that has not improved in two decades. A mother initiates breastfeeding within one hour after birth, it is advised that the infant should be exclusively ( without dilution or use of any other foodstuff) breastfed for six months of life to achieve growth. Breastfeeding should continue for up to two years or beyond, for me personally, I will tell my wife to feed my children for nothing less than three and half years ( that would have been a good year of discipleship). Do you know that there are about eleven breastfeeding positions?

One might be asking for the benefits of stressing oneself to breastfeed when there are substitutes for natural milk. Breast milk provides all the energy and nutrients that the infant need for the first six months of life. Breast-fed children perform better on intelligence tests and are less likely to be obese and less prone to diabetes. Breastfeeding is not only beneficial to the infants but also helpful to the mother, breastfeeding to a greater extent lowers the risk of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, rheumatoid, arthritis, lupus, osteoporosis, endometrosis, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases.

In conclusion, WHO recommended that mothers with suspected or confirmed should be encouraged to initiate or continue to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is the cornerstone of infant and young child survival, nutrition and development, and maternal health.

REFLECTION: A woman with a vision empowers an empire of women to do more, see more and be more.
